At PHM, our roles and reasons for being here are many. We’ve asked people to answer a few questions, letting us know a few of the things that make them unique, what they like best about PHM and of course, why they’ve chosen health.
Ryan Horton, Supervisor, Programmatic
It’s the people – I genuinely work with some of the smartest people I’ve ever met! There are a couple of leaders here that have really inspired me just by being able to observe the way they conduct themselves; and doing so helps me become a better leader myself.
The collaborative team culture is also front and center for me. If I have an idea, even if it isn’t fully fleshed out yet, I consistently feel heard by my teammates. The people I work with make the work easier and more enjoyable.
I have great memories from visiting LA, so I’d love to go out there again and check out their office! I’ve been to LA a few times and really loved the food and culture – I even got the chance to see some football games at SoFi stadium. And as someone who loves being out in the sun and relaxing, being able to go to the beach doesn’t hurt!
My guilty pleasure TV show at the moment is Bridgerton. I rewatched all of the previous seasons before Season 4 aired. Fun fact – a cousin of mine directed an episode as part of the new season, so the show has a personal tie for me too!
I’m an avid podcast listener. One that I love is Pivot hosted by Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway, which I know is a favorite among many at PHM. They cover a wide spectrum of business news topics, and it helps keep me informed even if I don’t always have the time to deep dive into every topic.
Another podcast I’ve been listening to recently is House of R. Each episode, the hosts do a feature on different pop culture fandoms, and they always touch on some of my favorite shows, like Game of Thrones. My favorite routine is to watch an episode of a show, then listen to them talk about it for hours – I’m truly at peace.
Speaking of podcasts, I like going for a walk and putting on whatever show I’m listening to at the time – just to get out of my head and away from screens. It can be easy to hyper-fixate on work when there are deliverables to get done, and sometimes I realize I haven’t stepped away much from my desk during the day.
In those moments, reminding myself that I’m a human who should probably go outside and look at the sun helps me relax. I also have to remind myself that stepping away and taking a moment for myself can make it easier for me to refresh and look at what’s on my plate with new eyes. That mental reframing has gone a long way for me.
I fell into the health industry on accident; I really didn’t intend to go into this line of work, but I’ve found such an appreciation for it. What’s been most surprising about working in this field is how I am consistently reminded that my physical health is important.
When you think about all of the strategy and effort it takes to get someone to consider their health, whether it’s thinking through what messaging will be most effective or building audience personas, there is so much brain power and technology that goes into encouraging people to take action. It always reminds me to check in with myself.
During my time at PHM, I’ve also been on the other side of our work as a patient, and being the recipient of the types of messaging I work on each day has felt very full circle. Those experiences, as well as those of my friends and family, have definitely informed my work and helped me keep the perspective of our audiences at the forefront. I often find myself thinking—how would someone like my dad respond to this kind of messaging? If you strip away the technology and data, what we do is ultimately about real people. It’s important work.
